Frequently Asked Questions

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles into specific points throughout the body to stimulate physical or emotional healing, balancing Yin and Yang properties in the body, and improving the flow of blood and qi (also known as “vital energy” that our body needs for optimal performance). Stimulating certain pressure points in the body can trigger the brain to release neurotransmitters like endorphins and serotonin, thus allowing the body to begin the natural process of healing.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are as thin as a strand of hair. Most of the time you will not even feel the needles. In some areas, you may feel a dull, achy, heavy, or even tingling sensation, all of which are normal responses to the acupuncture needle. Most patients find the treatment very relaxing and end up falling asleep during the duration of their session.

How many treatments will I need?

Everyone’s treatment plan and healing journey is individual. The number of treatments needed will depend on the condition being treated and how your body responds to acupuncture. Your practitioner will do a thorough consultation to make recommendations and discuss expectations of your treatment plan.  Most patients will need to start with 1-4 treatments per week depending on the severity of the condition. Once symptoms have reduced and optimal progress is made, maintenance treatment is recommended to keep your body healthy; 1-4 visits per month or as needed.

Does cupping therapy hurt?

Cupping is generally not painful and for many it has a relaxing effect on the nervous system. However, some individuals with chronic pain or muscular conditions may report feeling some sensitivity or aching where the cup is placed. If it ever feels too tight or uncomfortable please inform your acupuncturist so the appropriate adjustment can be made.

*Cupping may not be suitable for everyone. Certain restrictions apply including individuals with pacemakers, liver or kidney failure, heart disease and other cardiac disorders, or individuals taking blood thinners.

Will cupping therapy leave a mark?

You may notice some discoloration similar to bruising (also known as ecchymosis) after your cupping treatment, which is completely normal and temporary. This is usually a positive indication of blood flow and oxygen restoration, fading within a few days to about a week. Because we are encouraging increased blood circulation, it is important to stay extra hydrated before and after your cupping treatments.
